GOAL MEANS
MOKSHA JNANA
Jnanath eva Kaivalyam
JNANA SELF ENQUIRY
SELF ENQUIRY SCRIPTURAL STUDY
SCRIPTURAL STUDY GURU
HOW DOES THE STUDENT APPROACH THE GURU?
•As LORD KRISHNA SAID
•TADVIDHI PRANIPATENA PARIPRASHNENA SEVAYA
•Prostrate to the guru without ego
•Enquire sincerely
•Serve him selflessly
HOW DOES THE GURU RESPOND?
•Being an ocean of compassion =DAYASINDUM
•And the supreme knower of BRAHMAN =BRAHMAVIT UTTAMAM
•He will willingly oblige
•After all BRAHMAVIDYA is his autobiography
•He is a SROTRIYA BRAHMA NISTA
What are the Qualifications of a Student?
•The student referred to as ADHIKARI here is comparable to
•PREPARED SOIL
•KNOWLEDGE is like the SEED
•MOKSHA is like the FRUIT
PRIMARY and SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONSOF THE STUDENT ARE
•VISHESHA or PRIMARY qualification is SADANA CHATUSHTAYA SAMPATTI
•SAHAKARINAH or SECONDARY Qualifications are appropriate TIME, PLACE and STAGE OF LIFE
VISESHA OR PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS ARE
•THE 4 Ds or the 4 Disciplines called CHATVARI SADANANI
•Abidance in Atma is possible only with the possession of optimal levels of these Chatvari Sadanani
•With out these Atma jnana is IMPOSSIBLE
•YAD ABHAVE NA SIDHYATI
•The student with these 4 mandatory qualifications—the
•CHATVARI SADANANI is called SADANA CHATUSHTAYA SAMPANNA
THE 4‘D’s
•In short, they are
•1]VIVEKA=DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN NITHYA AND ANITHYA
The permanent and ephemeral
•2]VIRAGYA=DISPASSION TOWARDS THE ANITHYA
•3]SHAMADI SHATKA SAMPATTI
—SHAMA, DAMA, UPARAMA, TITIKSHA, SHRADDA and SAMADANA
•4]MUMUKSHUTVAM = DESIRE FOR MOKSHA
WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THIS DISCIPLINE?
•With VIVEKA-THE ABILITY TO DISTINGUISH SATHYA FROM MITHYA ONE EXPERIENCES A
• GRADUAL SHIFT FROM THE TRIANGULAR FORMAT OF
ESHWARA—JIVA—JAGATH
TO THE
BINARY FORMAT – BRAHMA SATHYA JAGATH MITHYA
•WE MAKE AN INTELLECTUAL SHIFT FROM VYAVAHARIKA PRAPANCHA TO THE PARAMARTHIKA TRUTH
•This becomes as assimilated fact with viveka
•Dispassion for the anithya Jagath becomes effortless with VIRAGYA
•VIRAJYA VISHAYA VRAATHA DOSHA DRISHTYA MUHURMUHUH
•We have to repeatedly reassure ourselves that detachment towards the impermanent = vishayavratha, would free us from worry, anxiety and grief
•BRAHMA SATHYA JAGATH MITHYA
SHAMA or MANO NIGRAHA
•SVA LAKSHYE NIYATA AVASTHA MANASAH SHAMA UCHYATE
•When ones own ultimate goal of life [sva lakshye] is attainment of permanent peace, security and happiness in GOD
•When the mind abides on this permanent goal-GOD
[nithya avastha manasah]
•One is said to have mastered the mind [SHAMA]
MUHURMUHUH means AGAIN and AGAIN
•With practice and repeated use of VIVEKA in all aspects of life we come to realise that every conceivable thing right from our BMC [DEHADI] all the way upto Brahmaji [BRAHMA PARYANTE], everything is ANITHYA—BHOGA VASTUNI
•When this knowledge becomes a conviction, the desire to give up the anithya [JIHASA] is natural
•The understanding of the fleeting nature and purposeless of anithya vastuni or DOSHA DARSHANA helps us to redirect our thoughts to GOD
•This redirection of the mind from MATERIAL TO SPIRITUAL thoughts is called SHAMA
•LET`S PROCEED FROM HERE

Verse 18

Karma Upasana yoga is presented as the first stage
•Jnana yoga as the second stage
•They are sequential yet overlapping
•Not mutually exclusive
Karma – Jnana conjunction (Samuchaya)
•Shravanam helps in developing the qualifications. Thus, karma yoga involves Jnana yoga, even though in a small proportion
• As one becomes more & more mature, the approach slightly changes. From karma yoga domination to Jnana yoga domination
•Even when one becomes Jnana yoga Pradhana, Karma yoga is not totally dropped
3 stage Process
•First, I recognize I am a seeker of liberation- without knowing what gives liberation, therefore called a seeker
•Next, I understand through scriptures that only self knowledge gives liberation
• Scriptural study under a Guru is compulsory, so one becomes a seeker of scriptural study under a Guru
•When all the three types of conversions have taken place, the Mumukshu has become a Jignasu, a desirer of knowledge
What knowledge? Atmanaha tatvam Desirous of knowing one’s real nature Sravanam requires time
So what should the disciple do?
Gurum upasideth
He should approach the Guru - knowledge has to be gained through the study of scriptures only with the help of a Guru
And what type of a Guru? Praajnam
An enlightened wise Guru.
For what purpose?
Yasmaat bandha vimokshanam
•Approach a Guru for gaining knowledge, because of whom, one is able to drop the shackles in the form of BMS complex & pancha kosha complex
•The bondage disappears by exposure to systematic scriptural teachings
•This is possible only through a Guru
•Without a Guru, the study will not be efficacious
