Greatness of the Gita
•The Vedas are voluminous.
•Lord Krishna has condensed the Vedas into Gita in 700 verses.

śrī bhagavānuvāca |
aśocyānanvaśocatvaṁ prajñāvādāṁśca bhāṣase
gatāsūnagatāsūṁśca nānuśocanti paṇḍitāḥ ||2.11||
The Lord said: You are grieving for those who should not be grieved for. At
the same ime, you are speaking the words of the wise people. Wise men do not
grieve for the dead and for the living.
•na anusochanthi panditaha
• means the wise people (pandita) do not grieve ( sochanthi )
Krishna condenses the entire Gita Shastra
•Self ignorance is the cause of all human problems
•Self knowledge is the only way out of it
•Atma ajnanam Samsara karanam
•Atma jnanam Moksha Karanam
•Moksha gives freedom from samsara
śrī bhagavānuvāca |

na anusochanthi panditaha
– means the wise people (pandita) do not grieve ( sochanthi )
•gatasun agatasun cha – wise people do not grieve for the living nor do they grieve for the dead
•asochyan anvasocha ha – you are grieving for those people who do not deserve any grief
•pragnya vadamscha bhashase - so don’t speak like a wise person when you are not one
•Like an actor who dons several roles; He does not identify with any with them
•Play the role life has given you to the best of your ability
•The argument will be my suffering is real
•Ask who is suffering ? – It is the mother, father, son, daughter role is suffering – not the real “I”
•na anusochanthi panditaha
•– means the wise people (pandita) do not grieve ( sochanthi )
Justification Trap
•asochyan anvasocha ha – you are grieving for those people who do not deserve any grief
•pragnya vadamscha bhashase - so don’t speak like a wise person

Verse 2.14

mātrāsparśāstu kauntēya śītōṣṇasukhaduḥkhadāḥ |
āgamāpāyinō'nityāstāṃstitikṣasva bhārata || 2.14 ||
Oh Arjuna! Sense organs and objects which casue cold, heat, pleasure and
pain are subject to arrival and departure. They are impermanent. Oh Arjuna!
Endure them.
Anātmā is Impermanent - Anithya
Verse 2.20

na jāyatē mriyatē vā kadācit
nāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ|
ajō nityaḥ śāśvatō'yaṃ purāṇō
na hanyatē hanyamānē śarīrē || 2.20 ||
This (Self) is neither born at any time nor does it die (at any time). It will
neither come to existence (at one time) nor will it disappear again (at another
time). This is unborn, eternal and free from decay as well as growth. (It) is not
affected when the body is affected.
Six modifications
Existence= ASTI= # ayam na bhutva
Birth= JAYATE= # na jayate; ajo
Growth= VARDHATE= # purano
Change= VIPARINAMATE= # na hanyate
Decay= APAKSHIYATE= # sasvato
Death= VINASYATI= # na mriyate; na abhavita; nitya
Finding Atma
Eternal= Nityaha
Reality= Sathyaha
All pervading= Sarvagathaha
Never an object; ever the subject= Aprameya
Not the doer; not the enjoyer= Akarta; Abhokta
Does not change= Nirvikara
Verse 2.41

vyavasāyātmikā buddhirēkēha kurunandana|
bahuśākhā hyanantāśca buddhayō'vyavasāyinām || 2.41 ||
Oh Arjuna! (There is only) one clear understanding in this field. However, the
notions of those without clarity are many branched and endless.
Verse 2.55

śrībhagavānuvāca
prajahāti yadā kāmān sarvān pārtha manōgatān |
ātmanyēva''tmanā tuṣṭaḥ sthitaprajñastadōcyatē || 2.55 ||
The Lord Answered – Oh Arjuna! satisfied in himself by himself, when one
gives up all the desires obtaining in the mind, then, he is said to be (a man) of
firm knowledge.
Verse 2.72

ēṣā brāhmī sthitiḥ pārtha naināṃ prāpya vimuhyati |
sthitvā'syāmantakālē'pi brahmanirvāṇamṛcchati || 2.72 ||
Oh Arjuna! This is called brāhmī sthitiḥ. Having attained this one is not
deluded. Being established in this even at the time of death, he attains oneness
with Brahman.
Clarity
•एषा eṣā This
•ब्राह्मी स्थितिः brāhmī sthitiḥ is Brahmi sthitih
• प्राप्य एनाम् prāpya enām Having attained this,
• न विमुह्यति na vimuhyati one is not deluded.
No coming back
• This state of mind is acquired through the thorough understanding of the Vedantic teaching .
•The jnani, once he attains this state of mind, never slides back to saṃsāra.
