Chapter 10 VIBHUTI YOGA
Contributed By Shri Ullas
VishvaroopaIshvara
•What is the material cause of this Creation?
oPot: Potter (Intelligent Cause), Clay (Material Cause)
oCreation: God (Intelligent + Material Cause)
•So then where is God?
oWhere is he not? Revere everything…
Material cause – God cannot bring any material that is not already part of him. So he just manifests.
So all that exists is him.
Just open your eyes and senses and he is there.
Anything glorious is him. For that matter any inglorious and in between is also him only.
What about my glory? We are also part of this Creation so we are also that God only. There is no separate glory.
Makes us humble. No jealousy.
How do I meditate?
•Too vast and abstract
•Need some symbols to meditate upon
oCountry: Flag :: Ishvara: Vibhutis
•Vibhutis:
oNirguna: Consciousness (Internal) and Existence (External)
Question
•Is God always there?
•Hint - Material cause is never away from the product
•Is God in all the creation or all the creation is in God?
•Hint - Water: Waves :: God : Creation

na tu māṃ śakyasē draṣṭumanēnaiva svacakṣuṣā |
divyaṃ dadāmi tē cakṣuḥ paśya mē yōgamaiśvaram || 11.8 ||
However, You cannot see Me with this (ordinary) eye of yours. I shall give you
a divine eye. See My divine power.

First reaction of Arjuna to Visva rupa> Wonderment
ARJUNA'S BHAYAM
CHAPTER 11 – SHLOKA 23
Wonderment- Fear- Devotion
•Great Riddle of Vishwaroopa- Without our effort Vishwaroopa Darshanam is not possible. When we get it is due to grace of the Lord and not because of our prayatna
•There is no qualification after which we can demand Vishwaroopa
•Vishwaroopa by Lord’s Grace, Moksha - Sharanagati- sishya sthehi maam prapannam.
• Vishwaroopa - by paroksha jnana- hearing or Aporaksha jnana by self knowledge and understanding
Vishwaroopa by Lord’s Grace Alone
•Arjuna -Warrior has asked for Pratyaksha Jnana of universal form which is like “Baptism by fire”. No one has asked before. Therefore compassionate Krishna has blessed him with grace
•Initially he has seen the space concept which is a wonderment of this vast universe
•Then he sees the Time concept- Kala. Next…………
rūpaṁ mahattē bahuvaktranētram
mahābāhō bahubāhūrupādam|
bahūdaraṁ bahudaṁṣṭrākarālam
dṛṣṭvā lōkāḥ pravyathitāstathā'ham || 11.23 ||
23. Oh Lord! People are frightened by seeing Your huge form which has many
mouths and eyes, which has many arms, thighs, and feet, which has many
abdomens, and which is fierce with many tusks; so also am I (frightened).
Vishwaroopam As Kala- 23-30
•People who accept God as Shrishti (constructive principle), should be ready to accept God as Stithi (sustainer), and Laya (Destructive principle) Karta
•Every Moment is both birth and Death in the realm of Time. Even in body continuous birth and death of cells occur. Every 8 years, almost every cell in the body is replaced
•Those who accept birth as Mangalam, have to accept death as Mangalam, union- separation, growth- ageing all Mangalams
•That is why in our tradition we also worship ugra roopams like Kali, Rudra, Narasimha. Sri Rudram- lord as kalagni rudraya
Bhayam-
•Arjuna like us is not yet ready to accept Death or Kala Tatvam
•Here Mouth represents time- irreversible like time. Food/ speech -Fierce Mouth with many teeth or tusks– bahudamstram Karalam
•Teeth representing the pain and suffering of this ephemeral world.
•So he says he is afraid to see this aspect pravyathitāntarātmā I am frightened at heart (24)
•He sees all warriors including Drona, Bhishma being sucked into his mouth and probably expects his own turn (26)
•He requests to recede to his ordinary form and seeks his graciousness and further teaching (30-31)
ARJUNA'S BHAKTI
CHAPTER 11 – SHLOKA 44
Contributed By Venkatesh Prasad
tasmāt praṇamya praṇidhāya kāyam
prasādayē tvāmahamīśamīḍyam |
pitēva putrasya sakhēva sakhyuḥ
priyaḥ priyāyārhasi dēva sōḍhum || 11.44 ||
Therefore, saluting and prostrating the body, I propitiate you, the adorable
Lord. Oh Lord! You should forgive my offences just as a father forgives those of
the son, just as a friend forgives those of the friend, and just as a husband
forgives those of the wife.
adṛṣṭapūrvaṃ hṛṣitō'smi dṛṣṭvā
bhayēna ca pravyathitaṃ manō mē |
tadēva mē darśaya dēva rūpam
prasīda dēvēśa jagannivāsa || 11.45 ||
Seeing the universal form which has not been seen before, I am delighted. At
the same time, my mind is afflicted with fear. Oh Lord! Show me that familiar
form itself, Oh God of gods! Oh Lord!, who is the abode of the Universe ! Be
gracious.
kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakrahastam
icchāmi tvāṃ draṣṭumahaṃ tathaiva |
tēnaiva rūpēṇa caturbhujēna
sahasrabāhō bhava viśvamūrtē || 11.46 ||
I wish to see you in the same form as before with crown, with mace and with
disc in your hand. Oh Lord, with thousand arms! Oh Lord, with Universal form!
Appear with that very same four-armed form.
VISHWA RUPA DARSANA YOGA
•Arjuna’s transition from Ashcharya to Bhaya to Bhakti.
•Vishwaroopa Darshana - Graduation from Eka roopa bhakti to Aneka roopa bhakti
•Divya Chakshu is a technical term meaning a Mind not overpowered by Ahamkara and Mamakara.
•Vishwaroopa Darshana is possible only by getting rid of Aham and Mama
•Vishwaroopa is sum total of all forms in the Universe.
na vēdayajñādhyayanairna dānaiḥ
na ca kriyābhirna tapōbhirugraiḥ |
ēvaṃrūpaḥ śakya ahaṃ nṛlōkē
draṣṭuṃ tvadanyēna kurupravīra || 11.48 ||
Neither by the study of the Vēdas and yajñas, nor by charity, nor by rituals,
nor by severe austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of mortals by
anyone other than you, Oh Arjuna!
mā tē vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvō
dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ghōramīdṛṅmamēdam |
vyapētabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvam
tadēva mē rūpamidaṃ prapaśya || 11.49 ||
Seeing such a frightening form of mine, may you have neither fear nor
delusion. With a pleased mind free from fear, see again that very same form of
Mine.
matkarmakṛnmatparamō madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ |
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūtēṣu yaḥ sa māmēti pāṇḍava || 11.55 ||
•Matkarmakrut-who performs all duties for me
•Matparah-who dedicates all credits to me and lives on my grace only
•Sangavarjitah-who is devoid of attachments and has no Raga Dvesha.
•Madbhaktah-who is devoted only to me
•Nirvairah Sarvabhuteshu-who has no enemity towards any creature
•Yah sa Mameti-such a person merges in me.
